Dynamic Ground
I checked out the Winter ITP show and ran into this wonderful project Dynamic Ground by Adam Lassy and Adi Marom. Controlled by a light sensor from above, the flowers close and open as you walk along the a transparent floor.

Hirshhorn's balloon

Diller Scofidio and Renfro's proposal for the Hirsshorn Gallery in Washington is a dynamic installation that blow-up the lobby. This translucent bubble will be installed and taken down twice a year, October and May - making the balloon a perennial that will bloom periodically on the Washington landscape. Check out the article in the Washington Post.

Outdoor Exploratorium

At San Francisco's Fort Mason, the Exploratorium has turned a small portion of the coast into an observatory for fluid dynamics. One of the Outdoor Exploratorium Exhibits is the above lift. It is a series of airfoils that rise and fall on vertical cables in response to varying wind speeds. This installation displays the diversity in rates of flow within a horizontal transect of moving air and begins to share insights into the biomechanics of bird flight in a shoreline environment.

Wind arrows is another installation that examines the wind at the shoreline. These arrows show the different laminars of airflow at different heights where one can see that the direction of each laminar can vary up to 20 or 90 degrees exhibiting the dynamic nature of fluid dynamics.

V&A's DECODE
V&A Decode generative identity from postspectacular on Vimeo.
On Exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is DECODE: Digital Design Sensations. The exhibition explores three themes in the digital art world: Code as a Raw Material, Interactivity, and The Network. As curator Louise Shannon explains the spirit of the exhibition to Mark Coles, "allowing people to get involved and interact".
Having the work speak to "the presence of the visitor" is at the heart of interactive design. Living in unresponsive environments surrounded by four white walls and in front of a computer screen, people forget the importance of physical interaction. Having environments express your energy and your movement brings you closer to your surroundings and heightens your awareness. While the magic of the iphone touch screen tickles our affinity for immediate gratification, it also desensitizes us to the physical world. The installations at the V&A Decode exhibit that go beyond virtual reality affect our perception of space, our body, and emotions.

Moving - from where you were to where you are. Do you forget the in between? Do you remember when you started? Is there a defined beginning and end? We often think of moving bodies, objects, and/or systems in a closed circuit. Energy is created and transferred but where? And when we stop moving, where does it go?

I found my maker . . . Reuben Margolin
Reuben Margolin is a Bay Area artist whose awe-inspiring kinetic sculptures have rocked my world. This fascination with fluid dynamics and caterpillars has taken him into a world of spectacular movement and a billion little pieces. I love it!
